A young heifer with a young calf at foot has dominated the show ring to claim the supreme exhibit at this year’s Simmental Feature Show, hosted by the Taroom Show Society on May 2 and 3.

Billa Park Kleopatra K136, exhibited by the York family from Billa Park Simmentals, Dulacca, left the judge for the day Andrew Postle, Branchview Charolais, Dalby, extremely impressed.  He said everyone wants females like Kleopatra within their herds because of her fertility and productivity.

Billa Park Kleopatra K136 won the 15 months and under 18 months class, before going on to win the junior champion and grand champion female in the Simmental ring. At the end of the Simmental judging, she lined up against the grand champion females from the Taroom Show’s Bos Indicus and Bos Taurus rings, which included the 2016 Sydney Royal interbreed female champion.

Scott York said to be named the overall champion female of the Taroom Show was something special.

“It’s not every day you get to say your exhibit beat the Sydney Royal interbreed champion. We love Kleopatra for her softness and doing ability. She’s a very balanced female, and it’s encouraging to know other people value her like we do,” Mr York said.

Billa Park Kleopatra K136 is sired by Woonallee Goldrush, the current top priced Australian Simmental bull, and is out of a Billa Park Poll Churchill cow.

Meldon Park Kurrojong

The reserve champion junior female, Meldon Park Kurrojong (P), exhibited by Bec Skene, Meldon Park Simmentals, Cecil Plains, with Rosie James, Wandoan.

The reserve champion junior female was awarded to Meldon Park Kurrojong (P), a 15-month-old heifer sired by Lurcuna General. The Skene family from Meldon Park Simmental’s enjoyed more success in the senior female classes, winning the senior champion female with Meldon Park Knockout and the reserve senior champion with Meldon Park Juke-Box (P).

Meldon Park Knockout was the junior champion female at Beef Australia 2015 and at the 2015 Brisbane Exhibition. She was shown as a 26-month-old at Taroom with a young calf at foot, and she will lead the Meldon Park team at this year’s Ekka.

“We will do a few local shows before Ekka, and after that we will turn out attention to our Meldon Park Invitational Bull Sale which will be held at Moura in September,” Miss Skene said.

“From a breed perspective, the quality of the Simmental cattle on show at Taroom was exceptional.”

It was a similar result in the bull section, with the junior champion bull Billa Park Poll Kryptonite K95 progressing through to be named the grand champion bull.

Billa Park Poll Kryptonite K95 is another Woonallee Goldrush son, and is out Billa Park Dani 25. Kryptonite is a half-brother to the stud’s 2014 top priced bull, Billa Park Hemisphere. The reserve junior champion bull was awarded to Blue Dog Knock Out K833, exhibited by Doug and Jan Bradshaw, Blue Dog Simmentals, Wandoan.

Scott and Claire York’s Casa Toro Black Knight, the only black Simmental to be exhibited at Taroom, won the senior champion bull. Kryptonite and Kleopatra teamed up with Billa Park Kakadu K90 to take out the exhibitors group and the sire or dams progeny group, before taking out the interbreed exhibitors group.
