Response to National Sale Survey

Simmental Opportunity Sale

Dear Simmental Members,

We wish to thank all members that responded to the survey sent out regarding the National Sale. We valued the contribution by members, and the Federal Board has extensively considered this input. This survey received one of the highest response rates from our membership, and this input allows the Federal Board to make informed decisions on behalf of all members.

In response to the feedback the board has decided to re-brand the National sale, The Simmental Opportunity Sale. This name has been chosen to represent both the purpose of the sale, and the opportunity it allows for both new and developing breeders to select a quality animal.

In 2023, the Simmental Opportunity sale will be held online via AuctionsPlus Friday 16th June, at 1pm AEST.

The sale will run as a helmsman auction and will be unreserved for all vendors. The floor price will be decided in the week before the sale, based on current market trends. Landmark Nutrien will once again be the agents, with John Settree the primary sale contact. To increase the interaction between sale vendors and the agents, the following meetings have been scheduled. These meetings will be conducted on Zoom –

  • Introductory meeting to discuss entry numbers, sale format and catalogue plans on 11th April at 7pm AEST.
  • Vendor meeting to set the floor price and establish final preparations and plans on Tuesday 13th June at 7pm AEST.

We acknowledge the members that wish the sale to be run as a live sale and are putting in plans for this to occur in 2024 if possible. We are excited about our increasing Simmental Youth development and are exploring opportunities to work with this committee in the future. Unfortunately, both logistically and financially, running a live sale in 2023 is not feasible.

The 2023 Entry Form, along with the 2023 updated conditions of entry will be sent to members early in the New Year. Entries are due on Monday 3rd April, with final photos and videos due on Monday 17th April. We strongly encourage all vendors to ensure their photos and videos are of a high quality. All photos and videos will be reviewed by the Sale Committee, and their inclusion in the catalogue and on AuctionsPlus will be at the discretion of the Committee. No late entries, photos or videos will be accepted. Please note the following changes in conditions for the 2023 sale –

  • Morphology testing of bulls will be a requirement of the 2023 sale.
  • Vendors from previous years will remain uncapped with entry numbers, unless they fall below the average price, then the following year the new rules will apply. New vendors to the sale will be capped at a starting number of 3 bulls and 3 females per full membership. However, moving forward after this point in time, vendors will be permitted to submit more entries per membership if they sell above the average.

We strongly encourage all members intending to enter the sale, to be proactive with marketing their own cattle. A suggested marketing plan can be found on the ASBA website. Sale catalogues will be printed in 2023. Approximately 10 catalogues will be distributed to vendors to provide to potential clients/interested parties at their discretion. A PDF catalogue will be available online.

If you have further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact Felicity, the Sale Committee, or a member of the Federal Board.

Kind regards,
ASBA Federal Board
