Furner beef producers Chris and Maris Bateman have collected the coveted silverware in the 2016 Southern Grassfed Carcase Classic, for the second year in a row.
Their 19-month-old Simmental-Hereford steer rose to the top from more than 720 entries from across SA and western Vic- making it the nation’s largest grassfed beef competition.
Their grand champion carcase scored 90.61 points from a possible 100, including maximum points for saleable meat yield and a Meat Standards Australia index of 62.61.
The 339.8 kilogram carcase was among 23 cattle the Batemans entered in early December last year.
The presentation dinner was held on Friday night at Naracoorte.
Mr Bateman says the event held at Teys Australia’s Naracoorte abattoir, is a great fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and chance to benchmark with other grassfed beef producers.
“It is good to see how your cattle fit with other producers who like to follow their cattle through and are working on improving them too,” he said.
“I take a lot of pride in my breeding – this probably means I am getting somewhere.”
