The January Simmental Advantage Lift-out publication – click on the photo to read online

Welcome to 2020

The new year seems to have crept up on us and now January is nearly over.

Two publications have been produced since our last newsletter. One to reach the stud membership and another to reach the commercial sector across Australia. The Simmental Advantage above, was inserted in the Australian Community Media publications last week and the 2019 Summer Annual Magazine was posted out to all our members early in December.

In the news

Carcase quality key for breed’s next step – The Mala-Daki Simmental Stud bred two of the three steers that took out the Stan Hill Trophy at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and in October the family had success in the RAS Beef Challenge. One of their steers was overall champion in the 70-day domestic class, after being named the individual winner in live assessments and awarded grand champion individual carcase.  P9 Simm Advantage

Strong growth from crossbred weaners – Andrew Tempra runs a commercial Black Simmental operation in Manjimup WA. “We sent four or five into the milk-fed market at nine monthd and they averaged 210 kilograms dressed, but the balance will go to a feedlot at between 300 and 400kgs. P6 Simm Advantage

Simbrah still delivering consistent results at Eidsvold – Kevin Preston’s father first bought Simmental bulls over two decades ago and they’re still performing just as well today.“We’ve never had a problem with the Simmental bulls, they [progeny] are often born pretty little but then they catch up really quickly. “[Their] weight for age means they are very well received by buyers and you get paid per kilo so that’s [good growth rates] obviously what we want. P44 Simm Annual

Gina’s lifelong dedication to Simmentals recognised – “Hard work” is synonymous with the name Gina Ryan in Australia’s Simmental industry.
And that hard work paid off once again when Gina was awarded Life Membership of Simmental Australia at the Melbourne Show on September 28. “I was shaking, I got a surprise, and the first thing I thought was that my mother and my husband aren’t here to share it with me.” P18 Simm Annual

Autumn Inventory  and Calf Recording S1 Forms
REMINDER that your Autumn Inventory and S1 forms will be sent as a PDF to your member login in the Download files section for you to print if necessary. If you don’t have a member login then you will still receive the hard copy by post. Autumn Inventory forms are due back at the office by the 30th of January.

OverseasSires and Dams
If you’re thinking of importing semen or embryos, please feel free to contact us to go through the pedigree of the animal to estimate the Australian grading. We have had a few queries after purchase, where members have been questioning the grading level an animal has been given on registration. Please note that there can be a difference in the grading levels between countries.

Draft Constitution feedback deadline extended
The deadline for the draft Constitution feedback has been extended to Friday 28th of February, as members wanted more time to meet with their branches to compile feedback. Please email your questions to eosimmental@abri.une.edu.au

DNA Testing Subsidies
ASBA will be continuing to subsidise Low Density testing in 2020 where herds have submitted three traits for Breedplan in 2019. They will receive a 50% discount on the LD test itself in 2020, on a pro-rata basis. Please contact your Federal rep or EO for more information.
